A Wookiee and his Yoda (Final)

I liked the drawing I did of Yoda and the Wookiee a couple of weeks ago, and wanted to do do a final version of it. Here's the final drawing!

 I'll add color tomorrow ;)

The Rhinos

Just some pen scribbles of some rhinos...nuff said.

It's fun drawing real loose. :D

Anna Marie

"You look more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs." -Rogue

I need practice drawing women (obviously...) and so how about some southern sass :D

Women are kind of hard to draw. One screwy line, one false move can turn her into an old hag.

Gulp...

I'm reading this comic called Mouse Guard, by David Peterson, about a civilization of mice during medieval times...it's pretty good, the artwork is pretty awesome :D So I drew a mouse...and a snake...and a mongoose.

More Tarzan

Here are a few quick Tarzan sketches I did today. He's pretty fun to draw, being all ape-like and stuff :D

Rock-A-Billy Final

So here is the final artwork of the goat/ram sketch i drew earlier this week. I'm pretty happy with it...although the horns kind of look like earthworms popping out of it's head...

Anyway check out the prior post for the sketch and final drawing to see what it looked like  before I added color :)

Big Horn

So, a new thing I'm going to try is an illustration a week. I want to pick from the sketches I have posted earlier in the week and turn it into an illustration (or from the previous week) It'll give a nice peek into how I work from sketch to final piece (with color).

For this week I liked how the composition from the goat sketch turned, sooo....

Here is the final drawing...tomorrow I'll be working on the color.

The original sketch...

Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl is one talented dude. Who knows what would have happened if Kurt Cobain was still around...

The Foo Fighters might be my favorite band. I think they are a strong contender for rock band of this generation :D

Little Boy Soldier

Here is a quick sketch of a character I've been developing for a comic, inspired by my little bro. (Just think Calvin and Hobbes, minus Hobbes, with more zombies and other wonderful monsters)

I have ADD when it comes to the projects I'm working on .......;)

Just a Wookiee and His Yoda

So, today I was wearing my Yoda t-shirt and it just put me in the mood to draw him :D

I was thinking of one of my favorite scenes from the newer Star Wars movies, when Yoda climbs aboard a Wookiee on the Wookiee planet (Episode 3) and I just ran with that idea.

Yoda was way too serious in the newer movies. I preferred him in the original movies when he was a little goof ball.

Rock-A-Billy

Well I'm not sure where this idea came from... I kind of just felt like drawing a goat/ram and this is what I came up with :D

Tarzan

Here is a more detailed concept sketch of Tarzan. I'm getting close to where I need to be to start heading towards final artwork for the 10 pages I have laid out, but I still need to flesh out the characters a little more to help with their consistency from panel to panel.

This is a rare pose for Tarzan. He really is suppose to be ape-like and on all fours a lot of the time. Disney's Tarzan design is very soild when you compare it to the original source material.

All the equipment you see Tarzan wearing in this sketch he took from African Tribesmen after he killed them... something Disney left out of their rendition. In one scene he actually is able to slip a noose (hence the grass rope in his left hand) around one of the native's necks and hangs him from a tree. Probably a little too graphic for youngsters ;) The bow, quiver, bracelet, anklet, and briefs were all acquired from these natives. The knife on the other hand was his father's, his human father's.

I also decided to give him a little body hair. Most Tarzan's you see he is cleanly shaven...doesn't make a whole lot of sense, if you ask me. It does however mention in the book how he tries, and somewhat succeeds in shaving his face with his father's knife, go figure... And as for his wonderful bangs, he does actually cut those himself to keep the hair out of his face :D

Scottie Hartnell

Man, what a game this guy had. 2 goals (one with .9 secs left in OT) and 6 penalty minutes. He's having an awesome year!

Go Fly-Guys!

Tarzan Character Studies

For my Tarzan project I haven't really fleshed out the character's designs, I've been to busy laying out the panels of the pages, and so, that's what these sketches are. They aren't the final designs, but they are pretty close!

Sabor the Lioness (heh, or in this case Sabor the Leopardess)

This is the grub/caterpillar that Tarzan is rummaging for. I've given him the name Gruby :D
(I might go with Grub-Grub, we'll see)

I've come to realize that drawing animals is a lot more enjoyable than drawing humans. Maybe it's because you get a little more creative freedom? Luckily Tarzan has plenty of animals :)

Marvel Heroes!

Marvel Heroes! Can ya name them? :D  (pretty simple)

Stay tuned for part two!

Turning Over a New Leaf

My good friend Zach asked me a very serious question, "Haven't you ever seen a vegan dinosaur?" This image crossed my head of a carnivore turning herbivore.

And no. I have never seen a vegan dinosaur.

Ummm...hello there.

I find it pretty funny how dogs always want a taste of what you are eating. It could be rock and they'd want a bite...or in this case a twig.

My sister and brother in-law's dog, Lucy, is a good example of this. Her little bug eyes just look up at your food as you eat. It's pretty funny looking.

Animal Studies

Here are some quick animal studies I drew up!

It's always a good idea to do research on a subject before tackling it in an illustration or really, for any project ;)

King of the Apes, meet King of the Jungle...

Here is a quick concept sketch I did for the Tarzan project I assigned to my self.

The Lion/Leopard needs some work. My drawing kind of looks like a giant mouse... Oh well, that's what concept sketching is for, right? I'll get it eventually.

This sketch depicts Sabor which the original Tarzan book describes as a Lioness that rules the jungle. Do lions actually live in the jungle? I know the jungle is home to Jaguars, Panthers, and Tigers (i think) but then again, "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight". I guess I'll have to do some research...

Ninja Pizza!

Yeah, Raphael is pretty cool, but he is kind of rude...Michelangelo he's just a fun-loving, party dude!

Michelangelo was always my favorite :D

I wasn't allowed to bring my nunchucks to school :/ (I think this is first grade?)
Thank you Brandon, for digging up this memory.

Freddie Mercury

I was listening to some Queen (one of my favorites) earlier today, and thought, "wow that guy sure can sing..."

Diners, Drive-Ins, and ...Brrrraaains

After years of eating nothing but fair from local greasy spoons, Guy now craves a specific type of sustenance....

Let this be a reminder to you kiddies--eat your veggies.

King of the Apes

Well well well, my first post. I've decided to start off by showing a few of the sketches of the current project I've been working on. Here's a little background, if ya don't mind. Some of my favorite projects in art school involved me taking existing written material and turning them into comic book form. For example, here a couple of links for some previous projects of mine, one for the Iliad and one I did of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. So when deciding on how I wanted to bolster my portfolio I wanted to revisit this idea. So next I had to decide on what i wanted to draw. I thought, "I know! I want to a draw a half naked man running through the jungle!" haha I kid I kid...that's only part of it :P  I really was just looking for material that would allow me to draw both human and animal, plus something with really great action scenes, and what better than Tarzan? Now these weren't drawn today, but here are some thumbnail comps of the pages I've done so far.

These are pretty rough, but this is usually how I work in the first stages of any illustration I do. The basic idea here is while Tarzan is foraging for food (a caterpillar) he is unaware he is being stalked by the lioness Sabor. Hopefully you can decipher whats going on. Let me know if you have any suggestions :D And here is a little bonus for today, enjoy!

A New Day, Brings New Ideas...

So, I figured I'd jump on the Blog train. CHOOO CHOOO....All aboard!.... Corny? Of course, and there is more where that came from ;D

My name is Fred by the way, Frederick john Davis IV to be exact, but Fred works just as well. I'm intending this post to be the first, of many to come. A Sketch a Day, is intended to be exactly that. Whether it's just some chicken scratch or a tightened thumb nail drawing. The point of this blog is to keep the creative juices flowing, and keep me motivated as an Illustrator. Feedback would also be nice, on some of my ideas, but the main goal is keep me drawing. There has been days even weeks, I would go with out picking up a pencil and drawing a single line....wow, it's even more sad when i see that in text :/
This needs to change!

In this space I will be posting various sketches (or doodles, which ever you prefer) of projects I've been working on or just thoughts out of the old thinking box. This will be a nice peek inside of my head and some of the processes I go through when starting an Illustration from scratch. So without further ado, Welcome! and enjoy my drawrings :D

Ps. For those interested in seeing some of my work, check out artoffred.com or http://freddavis.deviantart.com/gallery/    Thanks for stopping by!
